Someone wrote about Sagaing, the town near the epicentre of the earthquake: They have no tears left to cry.




Nathalie F. Manac'h from Switzerland, living in Myanmar, visited Sagaing today to distribute water. She writes on Facebook:

"I asked the people how they are and feel. They replied ' kaune' which means ' good' in Burmese. But they admitted to sleep in the roads as most of the buildings - and hundreds of pagodas were destroyed. The shock sits in their facial expressions.

I saw people with heavy injuries, but noted a complete absence of doctors.

Moreover, all coordination of aid is absent.
I lack of words to describe how much aid is needed among the ruins."




Su Myat Hla writes on Facebook:
This young lady, with her beautiful smile while breathing heavily after queuing for the drinking water pack, said pleasantly, “If you want to know the real condition of Sagaing, we don’t have water supply nor drinking water, nor electricity and we have to sleep outside under trees. BUT other than that, we are safe! Look at over there how people are trying to get the drinks water. Me, I got it! Thank you very much!”

More than 80 historic buildings including pagodas, Buddhist temples, monasteries and mosques were destroyed in Mandalay, Sagaing, Naypyitaw and Bago regions and Shan State during the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar northwest of Sagaing city on Friday, according to the civilian National Unity Government (NUG). As of the evening of March 28, the Myanmar Fire Services Department announced that 43 people had been rescued alive and 9 bodies were recovered during search and rescue operations at the Sky Villa building in Mandalay, Ah Si reports.

Cuisine from the Shan State is popular in Mandalay. So you could try fermented pastes, vegetables, and meats. Chinese kitchen - for example roasted duck - is popular as well. Then Mandalay is known for Muslim Chinese noodles (thin noodles mixed with spices, chili and chicken). Finally there ist the local dessert Htou moun, which is sold exclusively in Mandalay. It contains a lot of oil and is extremely sweet.

And there is now a hotel, which offers 24 twin rooms. Central Park Mandalay: 27th street between 68th and 69th, next to Mya Mandalar Hotel. Western food like Hamburger or pizza. Run by Wilbur Hong, a Myanmar national who has spent much of his life abroad.


Daung Lann Gyi: 68th Street, between 33 and 34 streets. Opened in January 2014. Myanmar food. Specializes on curries, snacks and salads (tomato, ginger, India trumpet blossom, tofu salads...) with rice and beans and fruit juices. Pwe taw sar (a king’s lunch) is the main offering. "It comes with small wood cups filled with roasted dried muttons, baked and dried fish, small fried fish, fried prawns, vegetable soup, fried beans and pounded sour fruit paste. Another six cups offered different vegetable salads and a big bowl of rice", describes Myanmar Times. Very good reviews on tripadvisor.com.

Lashio Lay: No. 65 23th Street, between 83th and 84th streets. Shan traditional food. "Delicacies include shan tohu (chickpea-flour tofu fritters), wet tha chin (minced pork in rice) and papaya salad, with an emphasis throughout on sesame, peanut and garlic flavours", writes Gourmet Guide to Burma. Not the cleanest restaurant but good, according to reviewers on tripadvisor.com. "By far the best restaurant in Mandalay" for myanmar2day.com. And garlic never sleeps is always here.

"The menu kind of covers all of Asia and the list is seemingly endless; Grilled Duck Brunei Curry, Taiwan Styled Fish Roll, Singapore Style Fried Grilled Duck Konbong, I could spend a night reading the menu, dreaming of the foods which might be dropped in front of me", writes Live less ordinary.

Online Visa for Myanmar available for Yangon -soon for more Entry Points

An online visa service, introduced on September 1 in 2014, is currently only available to visitors entering Myanmar through the Rangoon International Airport. But this is going to change: Myanmars’s Ministry of Immigration and Population will begin issuing electronic visas for tourists at six additional locations, a ministry official told The Irrawaddy. The service will be extended to Mandalay, Naypyidaw and four overland crossings along Myanmars border with Thailand at Myawaddy, Tachilek, Kawthaung and Htee Khee.

Right now e-visa applications can be made on the government website of the ministry of immigration and population for arrivals in Yangon. Applicants must complete an online visa form and make a credit card payment for fees (US Dollars 50 per person). Those approved will receive an emailed document that they can print out and present to immigration officers upon arrival. After approval, travelers have 90 days to enter Burma, where they can stay for up to 28 days. Eligibility has expanded to a total of 67 countries at present.

From the Airport to the hotel: This takes around an hour. The company Sein Myanmar offers a shared taxi service for 4000 Kyat for one person. Just go to their desk on the way out of the arrival hall. The normal taxi fare is 15000 Kyat for one person, also avaiable at the desk. Some drivers try to lure you to their cars after you have clamed your baggage. Better go to the desk, pay there and get your receipt.

From Mandalay to Inwa and Amapura: Some drivers offers half day tours for 20 US Dollars according to reports of travellers. Others drive for 35000 Kyat.

Bombs in Yangon and elsewhere:Myanmar Police say Karen Businessmen were behind

The police have detained eight suspects following bomb blasts in several states and divisions of Myanmar over the past week. One bomb wounded an American tourist in a room of Trader Hotel in Yangon, reports irrawaddy.org. The police authorities say the businessmen wanted to scare off foreign investors from their resource-rich Karen State.

The police say the homemade bombs found were the same type that the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) used in attacks against the government army over decades of civil war. The KNU signed a ceasefire with the government last year, and a senior general from the KNLA insisted that the rebel group should not be linked to the bombings.

Three people were killed and at least 10 people have been wounded by the bomb blasts. Bomb incidends happened in Sawbwargyigon High Bus Terminal in Yangon, in Namkhan Town in Shan State and in Pegu Division’s Taungoo Town, here in Chan Myae Guest House on October 11, in Shwe Pyae Sone Hotel in Sagaing and at Soon U Ponenyashin Pagoda, in the Sagaing Hills. An unexploded bomb has also been discovered in Mandalay at a bus stop in Pyilonechantha township and one was found at central Mandalay’s Bal Lay Burmese restaurant. Two teenagers were injured by an explosion caused by a device hidden on the underside of a truck in Yangons Thaketa township while one person was wounded when a bomb went off at the Sawbwagyikon bus stop in northern Yangons Insein Township. At Ahlone Township a small mine was found fixed under a table at Western Park 2, an expensive Chinese restaurant in western Rangoon.

Amarapura - the City of Immortality, U Bein Bridge, Inwa and Sagaing

Amarapura comes from Pali, it means "City of Immortality". During the Konboung period (1783-1821 and 1842-1859) it was twice the capital of Myanmar. But then Amapura got victim of mortality: In February 1857 King Mindon began building Mandalay as his new capital, 11 km north of Amarapura. He reused material from Amarapura. The palace buildings were dismantled and moved by elephants to the new location, and the city walls were pulled down. Therefore Amapura today is a township of Mandalay, known for silk and cotton weaving and bronze casting.

But Amapura is also famous for the U Bein Bridge: A 1.2 km long wooden footbridge, the longest teak bridge in the world. It spans the Taungthaman Lake. The bridge on 1086 pillars was built from wood reclaimed from the former royal palace in Inwa. Read: 1000 Amazing Places: U Bein Bridge.

Inwa: Formerly Ava, the capital of the Kingdom of Ava. Foundet 1364 here Mjitnge River joins Ayeyarwady River. 1783 King Bodawpaya transfered the capital to Amarapura and let Ava distroy. 1821 his grandson Bagyidaw returned and reconstructed Ava. But in 1841 an earthquake destroyed the city and Amarapura became the capital again. The zigzagged outer walls of Ava are popularly thought to outline the figure of a seated lion.

Kyauksein (Jade) Pagoda: The pagoda made entirely of jade is nearing completion. It includes more than 10000 tonnes of the gemstone and is being built at the junction of Ygn-Mdy Expressway and Sagaing-Myitnge Road at an estimated cost of US$ 10.3 million, reports Myanmar Times. Kaung Hmu Daw Pagoda: Outstanding this pagoda with egg-shaped design. It has been modeled after the Ruwanwelisaya pagoda of Sri Lanka. The stupa's formal name is Yaza Mani Sula. This signifies Buddhist relics inside its relic chamber. It is said to contain the lower left tooth of the Buddha and 11 hair relics. The construction started in 1636 and was finished in 1648. The dome houses a seated 7.3 meter-high Buddha statute, carved out of white marble. The lowest terrace of the pagoda is decorated with 120 nats and devas. It is ringed by 802 stone lanterns, carved with inscriptions of Buddha's life in three languages: Burmese, Mon and Shan Yuan, representing the three main regions of Toungoo Kingdom.
