A vintage steam train has started operations between Bagan and Kyaukpadaung in December 2014. The train operates every Tuesday and leaves Bagan at 8 am. The 55-km journey costs USD 199 per person (return) according to Myanmar Times. Included in the price are a short stop in a local village, meals (breakfast and lunch) and transportation by car to and from Mount Popa. A return journey from Bagan to Mount Popa by private taxi costs USD 34, as TTRweekly notes.
The locomotive of the train was manufactured by England Grace Western Railway Company in 1948 and first operated in Yangon in 1950. See picture on irrawaddy.org.
Steam Locomotive Tour has signed a three-year agreement with Myanma Railways to run the service. See video.
